چکیده

ÐSeveral e€ective acceleration techniques for volume rendering o€er ecient means to skip over empty space, providing signi®cant speedup without a€ecting image quality. The e€ectiveness of such an approach depends on its ability to accurately estimate the object boundary inside a volume with minimal computational overhead. We propose a novel boundary cell-based acceleration technique for ray casting which skips over empty space by accurately calculating the intersection distance for each ray. Very short distance estimation time is achieved by exploiting a projection template to calculate the parallel-projection values of each boundary cell and the coherency of adjacent cells. Since no hardware acceleration is used, the projection procedure can also be eciently parallelized. Experimental results are provided to demonstrate the performance of our new algorithm. # 1999 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved

Cell-Based First-Hit Ray Casting

Cell-based first-hit ray casting is a new technique for fast perspective volume visualization. This technique, based on the well known ray casting algorithm, performs iso-surfacing and supports interactive threshold adjustment. It is accelerated by the reduction of average ray path lengths to only a few steps per pixel. The volume is divided into cubic sub volumes. Each sub volume that is inter...

Implicit Adaptive Volume Ray-Casting

In this work we present an acceleration technique for direct volume rendering, that is based on a preprocessing step. This transforms the original uniform grid into an adaptively reduced tetrahedral grid. The basic idea is to exploit the inherent adaptivity information of the reduced grid for the ray integration with importance sampling. An integration step is always performed from cell face to...

Interactive visualisation of a virtual colonoscopy by combining ray casting with an acceleration corridor

We present a novel acceleration technique for the volume ray casting process used in virtual colonoscopy. Our method exploits the information obtained from casting a ray to avoid redundant computations for neighbouring rays. A corridor from the image plane into the volume data set is examined whenever a ray is cast. All rays passing through this corridor reach the same cell as the first non-spa...

Streaming Model Based Volume Ray Casting Implementation for Cell Broadband Engine

Interactive high quality volume rendering is becoming increasingly more important as the amount of more complex volumetric data steadily grows. While a number of volumetric rendering techniques have been widely used, ray casting has been recognized as an effective approach for generating high quality visualization. However, for most users, the use of ray casting has been limited to datasets tha...
